Adrian Campfield has delivered the first podium result for his Kevin Mills Racing Spectrum team on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit last weekend. The 18 year old, who lives near the famous Kent circuit, qualified third for both of the weekend’s races. After contact from behind in the opening laps of race one relegated him to 11th place with bent rear suspension, he drove superbly to fight back to seventh by race end. Race two was an epic battle in which Adrian maintained his composure under pressure. At one stage he had dropped to fifth place, but calmly picked off his opponents to secure third.

Adrian is teamed with 19 year old Australian Glen Wood. Glen was on a steep learning curve, having never seen the Brands Hatch layout before Friday’s 20 minute practice session. After that, it was straight into qualifying. ‘That was about as tough as anything I’ve done,’ said Glen. ‘This would be the most challenging circuit I’ve driven on, so I was just looking to get through as best I could with a straight car,’ he added. Despite his lack of experience, Glen acquitted himself very well and just missed out on a top ten finish. By the end of the weekend, Glen was lapping on par with the front runners and only a tenth off his new tyre qualifying run!

Adrian’s visit to the podium adds to the positive results for the team since switching to the Spectrum chassis this season. Adrian has previously recorded fourth at Oulton Park and sixth at Knockhill and Croft. Glen qualified on the front row for the final race at Croft where he finished fourth, adding to a string of top ten results for both drivers.

Team boss Kevin Mills was full of praise for his young drivers. ‘Adrian did a great job this weekend. We have shown the potential of the Spectrum chassis and our team from the opening round at Oulton Park; Adrian and Glen have been on for a podium previously only to be hit off during the race. After Saturday’s race I thought it was going to happen again!’ he said. ‘We know we have a car and a team capable of running at the front; we’re very much looking forward to Rockingham in three weeks,’ added Kevin.

The team has tested strongly at the Rockingham circuit previously. When the UK Formula Ford Championship visits the track on May 25/25, the Mills Racing team will welcome Alex Jones aboard a third team car; the Spectrum raced in its international debut by John Martin in 2006 when he memorably won the race on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.
