Cody Donald and Liam McLellan were Spectrum’s two star performers in Round 5 of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at the brand-new Tailem Bend circuit.
Donald showed great pace in qualifying, lining up third. In Race 1, Donald challenged Hunter McElrea at the front of the field, even taking the lead at one stage before being passed by McElrea on the final lap. Nevertheless, he finished in a still-respectable second position.
Another strong showing in Race 2 resulted in a third-place finish for Donald, before he was an unfortunate retirement from Race 3 due to contact and damage.
A red flag in qualifying spoiled Liam McLellan’s session, but he bounced back strongly in the races, working his way up to seventh in Race 1, and fourth in Races 2 and 3 – he finished fifth for the round.
Other Spectrum drivers in the event were Ben D’Alia, Conor Nicholson and Paul Zsidy. After being innocently caught up in a practice incident, D’Alia finished the weekend 11th overall.
Nicholson and Zsidy tangled in the opening race, but both cars were repaired for Races 2 and 3.
A couple of South Australian Spectrum drivers were also racing in their local event – the best of them was Christopher Slusarski, who finished 18th overall.
The next round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship will be held at Phillip Island, 28-30 September.
