Koykka closes in on title

After an intense weekend of competition at Summit Point Raceway, Finland’s Matias Köykkä has piloted his Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing Spectrum-Honda to yet another race win and podium finish, as well as another pole position. With just one weekend of racing to go in the F1600 Formula F Championship Series, Matias has eked out another two points advantage in his Championship lead on corrected points.

Having topped the opening two practice sessions on Friday, Australia’s Shae Davies carried the momentum into qualifying where he was on provisional pole position for most of the session before being narrowly pipped in the dying moments. Shae lined up third for the opening 20 lap encounter, with Köykkä heading the next row in fifth.

Bouncing back from a challenging first round at the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago, a focussed and fired-up Shae Davies was competitive right from the outset in Tasmania and posted a time of 56.2914s to finish overall fastest in practice, heading Synergy Motorsport’s Mathew Hart who was fastest in Friday’s opening session. Even in practice, Davies’ time was quicker than the 2011 pole position time set only four months ago.
