MARTIN EYES ISLAND MAGIC
International open wheeler pilot John Martin will return to the team that launched his car racing career when he joins Borland Racing Developments to drive his 2005 Spectrum 010b Formula Ford 1600 at the Island Magic race meeting on November 21-22. Fresh from the intensity of the final Superleague Formula race at Spain’s Jarama circuit and possible tests in GP2 and Formula Nippon, Martin sees the Magic meeting as an opportunity to get back to racing purely for fun.
“I’ve always been very serious about my motor racing, but obviously that’s gone up a few notches over the last few years,” John said. “This all came together when Paul (Zsidy) was in the UK recently and we were joking about flying my old car over do the Festival and the Walter Hayes (major UK FF1600 races). That didn’t happen, but the Island Magic fits really well into our schedule, so we thought let’s have some fun!” he added.
John has a proud history with his 2005 car, having won the Victorian State Championship, being runner up to his team mate Paul Laskazeski in the NSW State Championship, taking pole position and winning the final round of the 2005 Australian Formula Ford Championship at Sandown and taking pole position and winning the Formula Ford Cup at the A1GP meeting at Eastern Creek; all in his rookie season of racing cars! In all, John and his Spectrum 010b secured 20 race wins, 30 podium finishes and 8 pole positions from 42 race starts across 13 race meetings in 2005. John then went on to win the 2006 Australian Formula Ford Championship, the inaugural Championship for the Fiesta powered Formula Fords, aboard a Spectrum 011 and had his first International victory when he drove a Spectrum 011 to win at Brands Hatch in both his and the car’s UK debut.
“I have great memories of racing Formula Ford in my Spectrums with Borland Racing Developments. I love the Island, so I can’t wait to get down there and see how rusty I am!” John said through his trademark grin.
