MOSTERT DELIVERS IN DARWIN
Chaz Mostert has extended his lead in the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship after a dominant display at Darwin’s Hidden Valley circuit last weekend. The young Queenslander set the pace from the opening practice session aboard the Synergy Motorsport Spectrum 012.
Being the fastest in practice was something of a tainted achievement for Mostert, as it meant he had to lead the field out for qualifying on a circuit where the aerodynamic tow from a car in front can significantly reduce your lap time. As is often the case on circuits of this nature, qualifying was a bit of a lottery and Chaz ultimately qualified in 4th position, just 0.2 of a second off the fastest lap! “It’s a shame we didn’t get pole,” said Mostert, “but that was a really messy session and I didn’t get a good lap in, so I’m confident we have the pace for the races. Justin (Cotter) has the car spot on and I know we can just keep pumping out the laps.”
Chaz was spot on in his assessment, working his way into the lead of race one, building a margin and then controlling the race. Chaz commented, “Racing at this level is never easy, but I felt very comfortable in that race. The Synergy Motorsport Spectrum 012 is so easy to drive that I was able to get into the lead and then maintain the gap without pushing too hard, which meant I could look after my tyres for the other races.”
Race two was a lights to flag victory for Chaz, where he once again quickly established a commanding lead before backing off for the run to the finish. He set the fastest lap of the race, narrowly missing the lap record set by Ryan Simpson last year, driving a Synergy Motorsport Spectrum 011c. Chaz looked set to make it three wins for the weekend, but in the final race he was leading when he struck oil on the circuit and fell back to 5th place. He set the fastest race lap, but was unable to make up any of the lost positions. His two earlier race wins were enough to give him the round win and stretch his lead in the Championship. “It’s fantastic to come away from Darwin with more wins and a bigger lead in the Championship,” said Chaz. “I want to thank Justin and the Synergy Motorsport team for the hard work this season. The Spectrum was a jet all weekend and I’m sorry we got caught out by the oil in the final race and didn’t deliver the three wins the team deserved,” he added.
