Strong finish to 2011 for Spectrum
Spectrum Racing Cars ventured across Bass Strait to Tasmania’s Symmons Plains Raceway for the final round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship last weekend, with Spectrum representatives Borland Racing Developments and Synergy Motorsport looking to see the season out on a high after collecting race wins in the last two rounds at Phillip Island and Surfers Paradise.
Qualifying saw all four Spectrum drivers for the weekend occupy positions fifth through to eighth, with Bosch Batteries/ BRD’s Daniel Erickson heading the charge only 0.2s outside Nick Foster’s pole position time of 56.3865 seconds. With two long straights dominating the Apple Isle circuit’s 2.41km layout, high importance was placed on slip streaming with Erickson particularly confident about this prospect after he very effectively used a tow to win on the high speed Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in September.
In Saturday afternoon’s opening race it was Davbridge Constructions/ BRD’s Shae Davies who had his best race face on, the Queenslander first slicing past Mathew Hart off the start before reeling in team-mate Erickson in the tow on the second lap. Davies then caught the squabbling CAMS Rising Stars pair of Trent Harrison and Jack LeBrocq, with Erickson still breathing down his neck on the long run to turn six.
Defending from Erickson and trying to overtake Harrison, a late-braking Davies slid off at turn seven and onto the wet grass and mud which would suspend the luminous orange/ white 012 in its tracks, ending a strong run. Erickson later disposed of Harrison and set the fastest lap of the race en route to fourth place with Synergy team-mates Hart and Liam Sager collecting sixth and seventh respectively.
Race two on Sunday morning saw further progress for the BRD machines, Erickson overtaking LeBrocq at half distance before the CAMS Rising Star reclaimed the position with one lap remaining. Erickson finally surged ahead again on the final lap to take a well deserved third, while Davies drove a sensational race and applied some very impressive overtaking manoeuvres to finish fifth after starting twelfth on the grid, closely followed by the consistent Hart with Sager in seventh.
The final 15-lap race of the season was the most hotly contested encounter of the weekend, with no less than six cars engaging in a spirited battle. Erickson and Davies both caught and passed series champion Cameron Waters at turn seven, before Davies then overtook his team-mate in a slipstreaming manoeuvre on the penultimate lap to record a career best second place backed up by the fastest lap of the race.
Erickson held on for third and amassed enough points to finish second in the round points standings, while Queanbeyan youngster Hart improved yet again in the final race to finish fourth and seal the Rookie of the Year award, joining fellow standout first-timers Garth Tander, Jamie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom as winners of the prestigious title.
Spectrum Racing Cars thanks all of its teams, drivers and supporters for their efforts in 2011, and look forward to changing the game in 2012 with the all-new Spectrum 014 chassis.
