Double F1600 podium at Watkins Glen
Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing F1600 team and driver Ryan Leach finished the 2011 F1600 Formula F Championship season with two second-place finishes at Watkins Glen International, October 15-16.
Driving the No. 16 Honda Spectrum, Leach matched his best finish of the season with his performance at the historic 3.4-mile road course.
“It was a great weekend for us, the car was very quick, and I was able to pass almost anywhere,” Leach said. “I had a mishap in qualifying which led to an eighth place starting position on the grid for race 1. However, by Lap 2, I was already up to second, and Wyatt (Gooden) and I had a great battle for the lead for most of the race.”
Leach battled Gooden for the win, but the race was checkered early due to an incident on the front straight. The two drivers were side-by-side at the finish line, with Gooden taking the flag by just a nose.
In Race 2, Leach started seventh, and as he did the day before, quickly worked his way to the leader, Bill Valet. It was the third-straight second-place finish for Leach and the Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing team.
“I learned a lot this weekend, and I felt more comfortable in the car every time I drove it, which I believe the results show. I have to especially give thanks to Dominic and Nicholas Cape for everything this year, I have come a long way as a driver, and I owe it to them. I also need to thank my family for all their support as well as Walkers Bluff, Masterguard Coatings and Bunch and Associates.”
The Spectrum F1600 Formula F chassis debuted in the United States in June. In just six races, its two drivers (Leach and Mitch Martin) finished second five times.
“It was a good season,” said team owner Dominic Cape. “We were very happy with how Ryan performed and improved. He did a great job. We also are especially pleased with the progress of the Spectrum chassis.”
